No kidding; he really is a hand-me-down from our neighbor who took him form his sister's house where they kept him in a basket with a lid. The husband didn't like him. The neighbors three other dogs didn't like little "Unique" (that was his name, it was a bit too unique for us) and thought of him more as breakfast than a little play friend. They kept him in the spare room/storage room and since we never saw him before last week I am assuming he never got out. He is maybe 8-10 lbs and a pure "who-knows-what" breed.
Judging from his deep desire to be near us I assume he didn't have anybody spending time with him nor did he get much food. His ribs and hips are showing and he inhales his food like it's his last supper. The neighbor told us he was going to take him to the SPCA next week to get rid of him ...
We were thinking about getting a new dog and had played with the idea of a black lab girl ...
well we ended up with a black lap boy instead. He is the sweetest little thing. He never barks, we heard two ruffs from him in the last three days. He LOVES Lillie and everybody who will just pet him. He gets along with the cats perfectly. He just stares at them like "wow you are one strange dog". They are already out and hang out with us and Eddie. The best and easiest transition ever!
Eddie has never worn a collar or walked on a leash ... it's quite funny to watch him fight with it. We don't know how old he is, he still looks very much like a puppy. Next week we'll take him to the vet, we'll know maybe a bit more about him then. All we know for now is that he is such a wonderful, loving little guy, it's like he was born for us.
This weekend was a good one. We laughed again and the girls enjoyed hanging out with their new, little brother. I still miss my Willie-Boy. I keep calling the little guy Willie, he must be so confused between Unique (who calls his dog Unique anyways???), Willie and Eddie. He got a name tag, L chose it. It's a black bone with little stones. It's so big on him he looks like a rapper wearing it :)
I took Eddie to the Willie Tree and the chimes were quiet even thought the wind was blowing. when Eddie walked off to smell the grass they started singing. Very strange ...
I know my Willie didn't like to share me but I think he'd be o.k. with little Eddie staying with us since he has had such a sad start of his life. Willie was a little "homeless boy" and so was Eddie. I am sure he knows that Eddie is no replacement. Nobody could ever take Willie's place. But there was a new, empty space, ready to be taken by this little creature. They have a lot in common.except for the fact that Eddie loves to hang out with everybody. I come into the house and find him snuggled up with Lillie watching Barbie movies or laying on Patrick. It's nice that he is not quite as focused on me alone.
He is all snuggled up in Willie's old bed ... it's good to see a little puppy in there instead of it being hidden in the garage since I could not bare to look at it. We are picking up Will's ashes tomorrow .... Willie's last trip to the beach will be Eddie's first (we'll just have to get him used to driving a bit more, his trip yesterday resulted in a in-depth car cleaning and shampooing ...).
I am sure Willie will teach him in spirit how to chase the birds, the waves and how to not drowned while doing so (Will had a few near-death experiences running in way too far into the ocean).
So to all of my teary friends; I think you can put the Kleenex away. We are good for now. Still sad but our baby Eddie is a wonderful band aid for our boo-boo.
To GP CZ, no worries ... it wont affect the trip. Our wonderful friend Carol will hopefully be able to watch over Eddie.
Carol; he'll be a PERFECT match for Krissie!!! As soon as he had his check up we'll have to bring him for a play-date!
Eddie Czarnota, named after his cousin Eddie who lives with my mom in Germany and has the same eyes and the same understanding look.
