You are looking mighty good to me!
I swore in December of last year that this new year would be better!
Last year sucked royally in so many different ways and I was pretty done with it.
I ended the year laying in bed with the worst flu while my girlies got to ski with GP and I didn't even get to see it :(
BUT since I got sick in 2013 I had decided it didn't count for 2014.
And, knock on wood, so far this year has surprised us with many good things.
Somebody recently asked me "Where are you going from here? What is your goal?" and it took me a long time to answer the question.
I am still not sure if I know the full answer myself but when I closed my eyes I saw this picture of calmness, time, the girls smiling and happy, white and clean space and me sitting in a quiet space crocheting and watching the girls dance while Pat was reading a book.
That doesn't sound like describing a goal or a direction to many but to me that vision is heaven!
No rushing off to school, classes or activities, homework to be done, worries about grades and reading levels, measuring up to the system and class mates, fitting in, eating wholesome, organic foods that are fair traded and humanely raised, home made, clean clothes washed with organic, biodegradable detergent, a chemical free cleaned house, clutter free and always presentable.
Happy dogs that get at least one walk a day, happy cats that get...food, that about sums up what makes my cats happy, happy, egg laying chickens with an impeccable coop, a nice vegetable garden, pesticide free of course, no dog poop on the lawn and flowers blooming everywhere.
The older I get the more I yearn for time to stand still.
Time to sit and relax.
I mean being able to sit down and pick up a book or some wool without having 100 things on my to-do-list that keep me from doing that.
When we go to the cabin or Yosemite I enjoy the art of doing nothing.
It stresses me out if Pat asked me what I want to do in the afternoon.
I just so love the fact that we can do anything without having to do 100 other things first.
It's ok to sit and watch the river, read, just take the dogs for a nice long walk, go hike.
Usually we get a unit with a kitchen so we can feed the girls at all hours of the day. These units have a small amount of dishes, just enough for 4 guests. I love it! There are no dishes piling up. You want a drink you better clean a cup to pour your juice.
We bring one bag of clothing for all four of us. 2 or 3 outfits for each. If it gets dirty we wash it, one load will clean it all.
The girls bring each one bag of toys plus their art materials.
No toys laying around, they play with what they have or better yet, they go outside and find leaves and sticks and play with those.
The easier life is, the less stressful it is.
Its easy to sit down and feel ok doing nothing, reading, writing, when you don't have 100 chores to be done, piles of clothes to wash, dishes to wash, meal cooking, house cleaning...
I rather hide in my bedroom and close my eyes so I don't see all the work and chores that need to be done. When I sleep I don't feel guilty about taking a break but if I sit consciously on the couch I feel like I have a stop watch in front of me, counting down the minutes I am wasting doing nothing.
A few weeks ago we all went to look at some brand new apartments across from Pat's work. The thought of downsizing to a smaller place (actually the place is 1500 square feet) with no yard, no messy garage, maintenance and a year around heated pool was very inviting, to say the least.
They even have a garbage shoot.
We then looked at some brand new town homes.
All these model homes were so spacious and CLEAN! White walls, clean floors (of course, they are model homes).
The price for these places is way, way beyond what we can or even more so want to spent on rent or mortgage but I still wanted to live in a place like that.
After some number crunching we decided it would be absolute insanity to spend so much money on living in a place, any place.
But I still wanted to live like this. So what to do?
So went back to work ... at it again.
Everybody looks at us like we are completely crazy (and maybe we are).
For us its sort of a no-brainer. We want to live in a nice place but can't afford to, so we turn the (for the area reasonably priced) house we rent into a place we love and feel less temporary.
Feel warm, feel at home.
We invest $1000 or a little more and that still is less (combined with our rent) than what we'd spend on the "dream places" we had looked at PER month.
The idea of having a clutter free, clean, white walls, nice floors house with less stuff and more room and time to relax is wonderful.
I want it so badly!
I started right after New Years.
I stacked away the Ls toys. They just have one box out right now (due to their room being reconstructed). They are so happy with this box. They have completely forgotten bout the other 100 toys they have...for the time being at least.
I cleared the closets and "down sized" the quantity of clothes for all of us (we still have too much but it's much better now).
I emptied my kitchen cupboards, took out all mismatched plates (which was all we had), all cups and glasses and donated or trashed it ALL. ALL OF IT!
I spent $40 on a 6 settings dish set. White and simple.
We have six smaller glasses and 6 tall ones, 6 cutlery settings and nothing else.
Ever since I downsized the kitchen it takes me all of 10 minutes to clean up. The dishes are either in the dishwasher or cupboard, there is not enough to stand around anymore.
Now we are on step 2 of the "Improvement Process".
We bought nice wood pergo that was still cheaper than carpet (which we would have had to put in when we leave this place since we ripped out the old, dirty carpet). Re-loving the existing hardwood floor would take A LOT of time, money and patience, none of which I have much left.
This new floor looks very nice and will help with insulation.
The room the Ls slept in (we call it the dungeon since its so dark) will turn into the family closet.
We'll just get wall-to-wall wardrobes and this will needly hide all clothes, jackets and whatever else needs a home.
We'll get some sort of portable guest bed to accommodate guests but it'll be out of the room if nobody is visiting.
The "sunroom", that add-on room that was built with no insulation and is a constant eye sore, even with the new floors we put in, will be turned into the mudroom.
A place to keep our coats, school bags, shoes, ext. The cats have their cat tree in there and the dogs have their food in here. Thats it. No tables or horizontal areas that can get cluttered up.
It'll keep the house free of coats on chairs, keys getting lost in the piles and give this room finally a purpose.
So far we eliminated 3 beds (replaced it with a new trundle bed for the Ls), 2 book shelves, 2 desks, a huge ottoman and I am NOT DONE yet!
I am on my way to the clutter free and (hopefully sometimes) clean dream house.
The walls got new paint (white) and every brushstroke brings me more sense of accomplishment.
I feel like I want to paint myself white :)
Disclaimer, the bed underneath rolls out for sleeping :)
So call us crazy or insane (we are probably both) but it works for us and will make us happy (and help our landlord sell this old shack for a much better price ;)
We just settled on spending a few more years here (as long as our landlord doesn't kick us out or sells the place) so we better make the best out of it.
Pat loves being so close to his work and I love the fact that he can be home in matter of minutes, even if he has to go back later.
We can walk to school and have made quite a number of wonderful friends here in town.
I am happy to announce that I now work at the girls school as a paid art teacher 5 days a week for 3 hours a day, I run an extracurricular art class at another school AND I opened my own little business offering private art classes to elementary kids.
It's all falling into place now.
It took so many years to find my place but right now I feel like I won the lottery with all of these art classes, some extra money that I EARN (I haven't done that in a LONG time) and I still get to be a stay at home mom when the Ls get off school.
All I need is that clean and clutter free house and we'll work very hard on getting this completed ASAP.
And with this new cleaner, clutter free house I hope we'll have more time to sit and do nothing, play, dance, craft :) or just hold our loved ones ...
My girl Ginormica!
She doesn't lay eggs BUT she sure likes it when I hold her an stroke her near <3
So welcome 2014!
Show me all the good things you have in store for us!
I can't wait for it !!!

Best comment of the day
L got up for the 20th time and came in the kitchen while I was painting, stepped in paint and walked all the way through the kitchen with her paint-"paws".
Pat: WHAT is she doing here??? (after he had brought her back to bed 19 times already).
Me: Well remember that one night almost 9 years ago , when you and I did DOT-DOT-DOT and then 10 months later I had to go to the hospital? Remember that time?
Yeah, thats why she is here!
So the next time you don't want paint dragged all over the newly tiled floor you better keep your undies on!
Pat: NO COMMENT! ... looking at L "Go back to bed child!"
... ha ... shut him up right!!! :)
But at LAST, the SUN ROOM (formerly known as the play room / dumpster) has received it's new floor and is awaiting a beautiful white facelift tomorrow night.
Just in time for my sis to arrive!!!
After a LONG day of teaching in the am, organizing Ls b-day bash, ordering cake, getting stuff, painting, tiling, grouting, more painting and a few near-mental-breakdowns my Ls spoiled me and gave me the ROYAL spa treatment!
Lulu was picking off the grout from my legs and washed my feet with her face cloth and said "Mama I am your nailer, like the people who paint your toes in the shop."
THey couldn't find cucumber in the fridge so they gave me apples instead.
VERY relaxing, apple-pressure-massage. I still have the imprints on my cheeks.
And according to our Chinese Fortunes from tonights dinner at "Lou's House"
we should be looking forward to some good times ...
And Mr. Lou got a show to see.
After we had read our awesome fortunes L and I celebrated with the orange slices presented to us as deserts.
This is me "smiling" at Mr. Lou as he is bringing us the bill.
He almost dropped the bill-book and about peed his pants laughing.
This is me trying to hide my face, after Mr. Lou almost peed his pants laughing at me.
"Them crazy white folks in Milpitas. Don't pay ... just leave AND ... don't come back please! "
I can say with 100 % certainty that we are about to lose it!!
One more week of this reno shit and I am ready for the loony-bin, going there in the special bus, the one with the square wheels!
Off to bed ... the same regiment as today is awaiting us, plus swim lessons and doggy day care.
Dear God, please let it END!!! (the reno I mean ... just to be clear here!).

"Fun in the sun!"
Phase 124 of the rental remodel: Construction Debris Clean-Up.
Free dump day for Milpitas residents = 8 hours of hard labor in the BLAZING sun.
Pat rented a UHAUL and we just loaded that sucker up ... to the max ... TWICE!!!
When will it ever ENDDD???
The house is still a complete construction zone and GP will arrive in TWO days.
We better call in the help of Red Bull tomorrow.
... off to bed ... T-I-R-E-D!!!!!

Kitchen remodel - still and other pics
Oh Lord ... will it ever end?
... let me rephrase this, will I ever stop???
So while Pat was busy in the kitchen laying down the floor ...
I got antsy (since there wasn't much I could do) and wandered aimlessly through the house, ignoring all the work around, behind and infornt of me (not to talk about the laundry) and ended up in Lulu's room.
What-oh-what could I do now?
Hm????
I knew that there was hardwood floor under the carpet (since I already had ripped out the living room carpet and hallway) so I quickly (within half a day of hard work) removed the carpet in Lulu's room, scrubbed it and removed a gazillion nails and carpet staples and et voila ... a much cleaner and almost nice looking floor.
Lulu was so sweet and made me lunch all by herself and set it up for me :)
She is growing up so much and can even cut the bread now (it used to be broken in half since she was afraid to use the knife :)
A quick trip to Sweden Land (breakfast at 8:45 am at Ikea ... sweet!!!)
And her new room had more storage and didn't look so "not Lulu".
Enough room for her little princess dolls and the castle and the Barbie house.
She LOVES it and I do too!
Grab a Swiffer and some Orange Glow and we are clean ... no more vacuuming and carpet cleaning.
Since things went oh-so-smoothly in Lulu's room I decided to do the same in L's room yesterday afternoon .... while Pat was still working on the kitchen floor.
Men are so SLOW!!! :P
Anywho ... this time I ran into a wee bit of a problem.
OMG, what did they do in here?
I was expecting to find limbs and blood splatter while scraping off then dirt and removing all the filler material.
We needed some more room for the transition from the kitchen to the living room and removed two large planks which will help repair this mess.
We also have hardwood floor in all three TINY closets which can be used to repair these holes ad make the floor look nice again.
It's just a BIG job and after finding the other rooms in such great condition I was very much shocked when I discovered this mess.
I am pretty sure I am having a mid-remodel-crisis.
WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH US???
We are spending every $ we have on remodeling a house that we RENT???
We must have hit our heads really hard!!!
But once you see whats under the carpet you just want it out.
L wakes up every night with a stuffed nose and battles bad allergies.
Sleeping in this ...
After his shots today we took him, for the first time, to the dog park.
Oh how fun!
Except he ignores all the playful dogs and just runs up to their people for play and petting time :)
I hope the playing will come soon.
He drives his surrogate mom Amber and little Mr. Jake bonkers and makes them run as far as they can when they see him.
He bugs the older guys so much they just want to hide or growl at him.
But take him to a dog park where the dogs come and invite you to play and you don't know what to do???
Yup, he is definitely a Czarnota dog :)
He LOVES his Ls and run after them all day.
He is a very good, little brother even though half of the time we all call him Eddie :(
Other than that ... same old, same old.
L rocks her Jedi undies and loves to hang with the boys!
She went hiking with the Boy Scouts this weekend (YES, we have connections :) and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it.
L is also getting Lulu ready for her big day.
Lulu (as you can see) is NOT quite as excited but L is trying to convince her that school is fun!
Coming from the girl who cried when summer school was over :)
L truly loves going to school but Lulu, I am not so sure ...
... let me rephrase this, will I ever stop???

Anywho ... this time I ran into a wee bit of a problem.
The amount of dirt and mold that I found underneath aside, there are holes everywhere.
Somebody went hay-wire in this room, with a saw or an ax and just demolished this beautiful 1962 hardwood floor.OMG, what did they do in here?
I was expecting to find limbs and blood splatter while scraping off then dirt and removing all the filler material.
We needed some more room for the transition from the kitchen to the living room and removed two large planks which will help repair this mess.

We must have hit our heads really hard!!!
But once you see whats under the carpet you just want it out.
L wakes up every night with a stuffed nose and battles bad allergies.
Sleeping in this ...
It's bad, really bad!!!
For once I would like to feel just fine about people walking into my house.
No half painted closet doors, door frames, bathroom walls, no half torn apart kitchen, a nice, clean floor and a yard that you can walk in without running into bags and piles of remodeling debris.
Besides the fact that our summer has turned into a home-remodel-project that has caused us many, many, many sleepless nights, a few arguments in the car, in front of a home improvement store, the empty bank account and two tired and bored Ls ... everything is fine. really.
Nothing to complain about.
Jeez-Luise. This house/family is going bonkers!!
The Ls were out with friends this weekend and we had all Saturday to work hard but we are still NOT DONE and then I had to add a whole, new, HUGE project on top of it.
We are supposed to leave for Yosemite on Friday but somehow I don't feel like leaving.
I just want this to be done and over with BUT this would be the ONE and ONLY summer trip this family is going to take this summer and the Ls are so looking forward to it ... I guess we better go.
Buddy Tang will go to his old Forster family ... coming back as a 10 pound puppy.
He just had his last round of shots today and just doubled his weight in the last 4 weeks.
He has not lost any of his baby teeth which may mean that he is a bit younger than we thought and with 10 lbs at 12-14 weeks we'll probably add another 10 (at least) until we are done growing.
After his shots today we took him, for the first time, to the dog park.
Oh how fun!
Except he ignores all the playful dogs and just runs up to their people for play and petting time :)
I hope the playing will come soon.

It looks like the grout is finally in.
Boy ... I re"did" two room-flors and wrote a whole post and he is still working on the grout ... what's this? Snail-grouting?
Oh well.
I better go and stare him down ... hi-hi
Na, I won't do that. That would be mean!
I just take a nice, cool shower and go to bed instead :P
Whahahahah .....

Surprise ... it's ASBESTOS!
All was well this morning!
I dropped off L and Nick at school, drove back home with Lulu and after having my latte and chatting with my sis I decided to get going on the floor.
With my reno buddy Lulu by side, nothing could go wrong!
She was VERY helpful and peeled back the old lino with a "sharpie tool".
She handed the Holy MASTER her tools ...
... and loved wearing the protective glasses :)
Reno Fury :)
I/we peeled away two layers of old lino, glue and ripped out particle board that was on top of the original flooring.
There are 1000 ... of nails in this floor and I had to use the pry bar and hammer to remove them.
While hammering and trying to get out these nails I noticed that the original floor (while super ugly ... WHO would want that in their house and HOW THE HECK would one clean this crap???) was super sturdy.
Hm ... whatever could this be?
It's not tile, that would break much easier and it's not stone.
It's super strong and doesn't break.
WHAT IS IT???
Pat came home for lunch to check on his worker bees and also was puzzled by this mysterious material.
So we did what one always does when you have a questions and need an answer.
We googled it!
Original kitchen flooring materials in 1962.
BINGO ... there it was, a very pretty image of the same floor tile we have in our house.
Description : Asbestos-Vinyl-Flooring
YEAHHH!!!
Jack pot!!!
How lucky are we???
It's ugly and deadly AND I let my 5 year old come near it and touch it.
SWEET!!!
Holy crap!
I packed up Lulu and left the house in a complete panic!
From the car I emailed all friends in the area and asked for asylum for my poor, innocent kids.
Please give them shelter from cancer!!!
After leaving the Ls in asbestos-free-homes for the evening I went to Lowe's to find a solution.
Ripping it out is NOT an option because
A) touching and removing it would make it even more dangerous and create the dust that LOVES your lungs and
B) you need to have a hazmat team come and pick up the materials because it's POISON!!!
I just stared at the VERY NICE and HELPFUL guy at Lowe's, almost in tears, and he just said
"So this is what most people do."
Wait a minute, most people? you mean there are more people with cancer-floors?
He told us to use Lino-Primer to seal the whole floor and then just put the new flooring on top.
Best, easiest and actually safest method.
O.K. ... I can breath again, asbestos-free-Lowe's air (at that moment).
Knowing that this shit is under my feet is not making me happy but knowing that it's completely sealed up is giving me some peace of mind.
Also, I remember playing next to my father and his buddies, while they cut asbestos tiles for our HUGE garage and covered the whole outside of it with it.
If I didn't catch IT then then I am hoping walking on a sealed up version will not do me OR MY BELOVED FAMILY in either.
What a day!
11:25 pm and Pat is still ripping out the flooring.
I can not bend over anymore and my fingers are numb, which makes typing very HARD!
I am going to wash off the asbestos and go to bed.
That sweet stuff will still be there tomorrow ...
Who cares anyways.
What's cancer.
Nothing really, right!
I am almost sure we have seen it all now ... but ... then there is always the next reno project to teach me different.
Sweet asbestos dreams my friends!

this week in pics
... WOW!
This week was CRAZY!!!!
We worked every night until the wee hours on the kitchen, had the Ls in two different camps with two (quite far apart) locations ... way "smart" planing mom and .... I forget the rest.
Too much too fast!
The only way I can recall what happened is by going through my photo memory.
So lets wander, shall we?
Chicken being the egg-laying-doula while Rupaul is walking nervously up and down, anxiously awaiting the new arrival.
He does plumbing!
... in various positions!
Pat through the drain!
His master piece!
He does electrical work!
(With a degree in EE - he better :)
Going out to dinner ...
Ls had the "BEST" manners EVER!
Crash!
BTW, this is Lulu wearing Ls shirt as a dress :P
Meow hiding from that "terrible" puppy!
L and Nick at Summer School
Lulu at Cheer Camp
Lulu: "Mama, this is my BEST FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WORLD! I love her! I want her to move in with us!"
Mama: "Wow! Whats her name?"
Lulu: "I forgot"
Taking a break!
We used to come here 10 years ago, BC!
Still here and still OH SOOO GOOD!!!
Installing the new ceiling light
This is what we found under the old fixture.
Totally up to code. NOT!
The wires were capped off with tape and all exposed.
The electrical tape was so brittle ...
before
after a light tap with a tool.
SCARY!!!
Pat fixed it all up and we now have safe and ample illumination in our kitchen.
Buddy, fully exposed ...
