"Fun in the sun!"

Phase 124 of the rental remodel:  Construction Debris Clean-Up.

Free dump day for Milpitas residents = 8 hours of hard labor in the BLAZING sun.

Pat rented a UHAUL and we just loaded that sucker up ... to the max ... TWICE!!!

When will it ever ENDDD???
The house is still a complete construction zone and GP will arrive in TWO days.
We better call in the help of Red Bull tomorrow.

... off to bed ... T-I-R-E-D!!!!!

Kitchen remodel - still and other pics

Oh Lord ... will it ever end?
... let me rephrase this, will I ever stop???

So while Pat was busy in the kitchen laying down the floor ...

I got antsy (since there wasn't much I could do) and wandered aimlessly through the house, ignoring all the work around, behind and infornt of me (not to talk about the laundry) and ended up in Lulu's room.

What-oh-what could I do now?
Hm????

I knew that there was hardwood floor under the carpet (since I already had ripped out the living room carpet and hallway) so I quickly (within half a day of hard work) removed the carpet in Lulu's room, scrubbed it and removed a gazillion nails and carpet staples and et voila ... a much cleaner and almost nice looking floor.

Lulu was so sweet and made me lunch all by herself and set it up for me :)
She is growing up so much and can even cut the bread now (it used to be broken in half since she was afraid to use the knife :)

A quick trip to Sweden Land (breakfast at 8:45 am at Ikea ... sweet!!!)

And her new room had more storage and didn't look so "not Lulu".
Enough room for her little princess dolls and the castle and the Barbie house.
She LOVES it and I do too!

Grab a Swiffer and some Orange Glow and we are clean ... no more vacuuming and carpet cleaning.

Since things went oh-so-smoothly in Lulu's room I decided to do the same in L's room yesterday afternoon .... while Pat was still working on the kitchen floor.
Men are so SLOW!!! :P

Anywho ... this time I ran into a wee bit of a problem.

The amount of dirt and mold that I found underneath aside, there are holes everywhere.
Somebody went hay-wire in this room, with a saw or an ax and just demolished this beautiful 1962 hardwood floor.
OMG, what did they do in here?
I was expecting to find limbs and blood splatter while scraping off then dirt and removing all the filler material.

We needed some more room for the transition from the kitchen to the living room and removed two large planks which will help repair this mess.
We also have hardwood floor in all three TINY closets which can be used to repair these holes ad make the floor look nice again.
It's just a BIG job and after finding the other rooms in such great condition I was very much shocked when I discovered this mess.

I am pretty sure I am having a mid-remodel-crisis.

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH US???
We are spending every $ we have on remodeling a house that we RENT???
We must have hit our heads really hard!!!

But once you see whats under the carpet you just want it out.
L wakes up every night with a stuffed nose and battles bad allergies.
Sleeping in this ...

It's bad, really bad!!!

For once I would like to feel just fine about people walking into my house.
No half painted closet doors, door frames, bathroom walls, no half torn apart kitchen, a nice, clean floor and a yard that you can walk in without running into bags and piles of remodeling debris.

Besides the fact that our summer has turned into a home-remodel-project that has caused us many, many, many sleepless nights, a few arguments in the car, in front of a home improvement store, the empty bank account and two tired and bored Ls ... everything is fine. really.
Nothing to complain about.

Jeez-Luise. This house/family is going bonkers!!

The Ls were out with friends this weekend and we had all Saturday to work hard but we are still NOT DONE and then I had to add a whole, new, HUGE project on top of it.

We are supposed to leave for Yosemite on Friday but somehow I don't feel like leaving.
I just want this to be done and over with BUT this would be the ONE and ONLY summer trip this family is going to take this summer and the Ls are so looking forward to it ... I guess we better go.

Buddy Tang will go to his old Forster family ... coming back as a 10 pound puppy.

He just had his last round of  shots today and just doubled his weight in the last 4 weeks.
He has not lost any of his baby teeth which may mean that he is a bit younger than we thought and with 10 lbs at 12-14 weeks we'll probably add another 10 (at least) until we are done growing.

After his shots today we took him, for the first time, to the dog park.

Oh how fun!

Except he ignores all the playful dogs and just runs up to their people for play and petting time :)
I hope the playing will come soon.
He drives his surrogate mom Amber and little Mr. Jake bonkers and makes them run as far as they can when they see him.
He bugs the older guys so much they just want to hide or growl at him.
But take him to a dog park where the dogs come and invite you to play and you don't know what to do???

Yup, he is definitely a Czarnota dog :)

He LOVES his Ls and run after them all day.
He is a very good, little brother even though half of the time we all call him Eddie :(

Other than that ... same old, same old.
L rocks her Jedi undies and loves to hang with the boys!
She went hiking with the Boy Scouts this weekend (YES, we have connections :) and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it.

L is also getting Lulu ready for her big day.
Lulu (as you can see) is NOT quite as excited but L is trying to convince her that school is fun!
Coming from the girl who cried when summer school was over :)
L truly loves going to school but Lulu, I am not so sure ...

It looks like the grout is finally in.
Boy ... I re"did" two room-flors and wrote a whole post and he is still working on the grout ... what's this? Snail-grouting?

Oh well.
I better go and stare him down ... hi-hi
Na, I won't do that. That would be mean!
I just take a nice, cool shower and go to bed instead :P

Whahahahah .....

Surprise ... it's ASBESTOS!

All was well this morning!

I dropped off L and Nick at school, drove back home with Lulu and after having my latte and chatting with my sis I decided to get going on the floor.
With my reno buddy Lulu by side, nothing could go wrong!

She was VERY helpful and peeled back the old lino with a "sharpie tool".

She handed the Holy MASTER her tools ...

... and loved wearing the protective glasses :)

Reno Fury :)

I/we peeled away two layers of old lino, glue and ripped out particle board that was on top of the original flooring.

There are 1000 ... of nails in this floor and I had to use the pry bar and hammer to remove them.
While hammering and trying to get out these nails I noticed that the original floor (while super ugly ... WHO would want that in their house and HOW THE HECK would one clean this crap???) was super sturdy.
Hm ... whatever could this be?
It's not tile, that would break much easier and it's not stone.
It's super strong and doesn't break.
WHAT IS IT???

Pat came home for lunch to check on his worker bees and also was puzzled by this mysterious material.
So we did what one always does when you have a questions and need an answer.
We googled it!
Original kitchen flooring materials in 1962.
BINGO ... there it was, a very pretty image of the same floor tile we have in our house.

Description : Asbestos-Vinyl-Flooring
YEAHHH!!!
Jack pot!!!

How lucky are we???
It's ugly and deadly AND I let my 5 year old come near it and touch it.
SWEET!!!

Holy crap!
I packed up Lulu and left the house in a complete panic!
From the car I emailed all friends in the area and asked for asylum for my poor, innocent kids.
Please give them shelter from cancer!!!

After leaving the Ls in asbestos-free-homes for the evening I went to Lowe's to find a solution.

Ripping it out is NOT an option because
A) touching and removing it would make it even more dangerous and create the dust that LOVES your lungs and
B) you need to have a hazmat team come and pick up the materials because it's POISON!!!

I just stared at the VERY NICE and HELPFUL guy at Lowe's, almost in tears, and he just said
"So this is what most people do."

Wait a minute, most people? you mean there are more people with cancer-floors?
He told us to use Lino-Primer to seal the whole floor and then just put the new flooring on top.
Best, easiest and actually safest method.

O.K. ... I can breath again, asbestos-free-Lowe's air (at that moment).

Knowing that this shit is under my feet is not making me happy but knowing that it's completely sealed up is giving me some peace of mind.
Also, I remember playing next to my father and his buddies, while they cut asbestos tiles for our HUGE garage and covered the whole outside of it with it.
If I didn't catch IT then then I am hoping walking on a sealed up version will not do me OR MY BELOVED FAMILY in either.

What a day!

11:25 pm and Pat is still ripping out the flooring.
I can not bend over anymore and my fingers are numb, which makes typing very HARD!

I am going to wash off the asbestos and go to bed.
That sweet stuff will still be there tomorrow ...
Who cares anyways.
What's cancer.
Nothing really, right!

I am almost sure we have seen it all now ... but ... then there is always the next reno project to teach me different.

Sweet asbestos dreams my friends!

... WOW!

This week was CRAZY!!!!
We worked every night until the wee hours on the kitchen, had the Ls in two different camps with two (quite far apart) locations ... way "smart" planing mom and  .... I forget the rest.

Too much too fast!

The only way I can recall what happened is by going through my photo memory.
So lets wander, shall we?

This is what we found under the old fixture.

The electrical tape was so brittle ...
