So here we are. Anybody who knows us knows commitment and consistency is definitely one of our weak points, mine for sure. Therefore we will not commit to a certain number of good deeds ... we'll just see how far we can go. Let the counting begin;
Deed #2
A month ago L brought a "Giving Bank" home from school. Ever day for the last month we gave a small amount to the Giving Bank (a small container they made at school). The money will go to a Christian missionary in Mexico. We gave 5 cents for every chair we have in the house, or for every room, every book we own ... you get the picture.
Today was the day she had to bring her Giving Bank to school. I gave her $5 and said: "This is your money. You can do whatever you want to do with it. This would be a lot of rides at Super Franks "(a VERY cool hang out for kids with a small arcade).
She LOVES this place and always asks for tokens for the rides. We usually run out of time or I get out of it somehow ( I hate arcades, the noise drives me crazy!). I also said: "you can also put something of it into your giving bank if you'd like to."
L looked at the huge amount of money/tokens she had in her hand. I could see her little brain working hard on this one. Then she looked at me and said : "I'll give it all to the poor kids in mexico so they can buy new shoes. I don't need to go on the rides.".
I almost had tears in my eyes. I was so very proud of her and of her generosity. I know this girl and she does LOVE these rides very much. For her to give up these rides and to give all of her treasured "tokens" to a charity is quite something, after all she only 5 years old.
Needless to say I am a very proud mother today and the next time we'll go to Super Franks I will buy her tokens and let her enjoy her rides as much as she likes. She deserves it!!! I am so proud of you my Lillie-Bean. You have the biggest heart a little girl can have and you always think of others. You did good my Love, you did very good!!!
Deed #1
Goes on my cap (beam-beam :)
It was a few weeks ago but since we are counting for the year I am throwing it into the count.
One evening I drove to the grocery store (my nightly "outlet" to get out of the house ... yeah how fun is that !). When I got out of the car it was pouring down and pretty chilly for a CA evening.
I noticed a homeless man on a bench next to the shopping cars with a sign "just hungry".
I walked by, got my cart and went on to get inside the store to be somewhat warmer and at least dry.
I kept thinking of this man sitting out there in this wet cold asking strangers for food and started adding items to my cart. A loaf of bread, juice, milk, cheese, sandwich meat, crackers, fruit and some sweets. I asked the grocery bagger to put all of these items in a separate bag so I could give them to this man.
When I came out he was gone, the bench was empty. Then I saw a bag under the bench and the sign that he held right next to it. So I left the bag there and just walked to my car. After I loaded the car I sat behind the wheel and waited. And then he came back. He opened the bag, looked around, put the bag on the side like he didn't know what to do with it and sat right next to. After a while he picked it up again and started looking thought it. After that I left. It was enough for me to know that he had found the items and taken them.
I hope he had a few good meals and maybe felt a bit warmer inside knowing that sometimes little acts of kindness do happen to anybody.
I sure felt good for a few days afterwards. It felt good to do something nice ... anonymously!
